BFA Fine Arts Department and MFA Art Practice Department faculty member Gary Simmons (BFA 1988 Fine Arts) has won the eighth annual Joyce Alexander Wein Prize, given by the Studio Museum in Harlem. Simmons’ achievement was celebrated at the museum’s 2013 gala, which was held on October 28 at Cipriani Wall Street. He is the second SVA alumnus to receive the award: Lorna Simpson (BFA 1982 Photography) was the inaugural honoree.

Established in 2006 by jazz musician, art enthusiast and philanthropist George Wein in honor of his late wife, the prestigious $50,000 Wein Prize honors the artistic accomplishments of an African American artist “who demonstrates great innovation, promise and creativity.”

Simmons’ widely exhibited and praised work addresses racial, pedagogical and cultural concerns through distinctive erasure drawings and three-dimensional designs; it is in the permanent collections of museums including the Hirshorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, Washington, DC; the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles; and the Museum of Modern Art and Whitney Museum of American Art, New York. A monograph of his drawings, paintings and sculpture, Gary Simmons: Paradise, was published by Damiani in 2012.
