MFA Fine Arts Department faculty member Suzanne McClelland’s “Every Inch of My Love,” an exhibition of textual paintings created with dry pigment, gesso, polymer and oil on linen, features incorrect solutions to simple mathematical equations that highlight the likelihood of numerical and human shortcoming while drawing attention to the consequences of self-objectification. 
McClelland’s use of shape derived from textual elements creates a sense of two-dimensionality in pieces wrought with words and numbers that represent the artist’s visual world. On view at team (gallery, Inc.), 83 Grand Street, through November 17.
SVA alumnus Paul Hoppe (MFA 2005 Illustration as Visual Essay) is honored for a decade of creatively capturing NYC with “The Art of Paul Hoppe: 10 Years of New York Illustration,” an exhibition presented by the German Consulate. This large collection of drawings and illustrations is mainly narrative and ranges from editorial assignments to children’s stories for publishers as well as tributes to favorite childhood comics. On view at the German Consulate, 871 United Nations Plaza, First Avenue between 48th and 49th Streets, through November 29.
Guðmundur Thoroddsen (MFA 2011 Fine Arts) presents “Hobby and Work,” a mixed-media exhibition of carvings, drawings and collage that wrestle with masculinity from temporal and conceptual perspectives. Thoroddsen’s stylized technique explores themes of competition and outward appearance within a contemporary context. Boyishness and antiquated notions of manhood and manliness are personified by a smiling phallus and bearded figures at work and play.
