The art world’s center of gravity shifts southward in December with the opening of Art Basel Miami Beach and satellite fairs. For the seventh year in a row, SVA will head down to Miami to join the action. And for the second year in a row, SVA will exhibit the work of recent alumni at The Miami Project, a contemporary and modern art fair showcasing 65 galleries in the heart of the city’s Wynwood Arts District. Last year’s inaugural event was shortlisted as a “must see” by many observers and praised by veteran fairgoers like GalleristNY and Art F City.

One of seven participating artists, Anna Beeke (MFA 2013 Photography, Video and Related Media) offers a preview: “Though I was born and raised in Washington, DC, I was conceived in Washington State—on the heavily forested San Juan Islands. Having never been to the Pacific Northwest, I felt a compulsion to go to the place where I began life and the conviction that if I did I would surely find something there. What I found was the forest, and an intense sense of contentment and enchantment that harkened back to a more childish or primitive capacity to indulge the imagination.”

Curated by Dan Halm, project manager in the Office of External Relations, the presentation represents six undergraduate and graduate departments at the College, with work by Mark de Wilde (MFA 2013 Fine Arts), Jocelyne Gilead (BFA 2013 Fine Arts), Bradford Kessler (MFA 2013 Art Practice), Cassandra Levine (BFA 2011 Fine Arts; MFA 2013 Fine Arts), Wyatt Mills (BFA 2013 Fine Arts), current BFA Fine Arts student Frederick Paxton, Randhy Rodriguez (MPS 2013 Digital Photography) and Ilona Szwarc (BFA 2013 Photography) as well as Beeke.
