The SVA Alumni Society recently announced the recipients of scholarship awards supporting thesis projects and portfolio development for graduating students.

Each year, the Alumni Society provides awards and scholarships to students at both the undergraduate and graduate levels in all majors offered by the College. To be considered for Scholarship Awards, students submit proposals for ambitious projects that are vetted by professionals across arts disciplines in a rigorous process. This year, 41 winners were chosen to receive awards ranging from $500 to $5,000 each.

Rein_Simone425“Filmmaking is an expensive process,” said Shubhashish Bhutiani (BFA 2013 Film and Video), a 2013 Alumni Scholarship Award recipient and director of the critically acclaimed film Kush. “Winning the William C. Arkell Memorial Award helped me realize the film I wanted to make without compromising my vision. I was able to lure in great talent, fund production and postproduction and keep the film on the scale that I imagined. Most importantly, it gave me the confidence that people backed the film and connected with my idea.”

Aronson_Melanie425The Alumni Society currently administers the Alumni Scholarship Fund, whose programs include Alumni Scholarship Awards, the Housing Scholarship Award, the Merit Award and more than a dozen named scholarship funds. All awards from the Scholarship Fund are supported by generous donations from SVA alumni, friends, family and other supporters, and one hundred percent of the monies donated to the Society are used to fund student awards.
