SVA Students and Alumni Win Seven Art Directors Club Awards

Work by SVA students and recent graduates won seven awards at the 2014 Art Directors Club gala, held on April 9 in Miami. This remarkable tally once again earned SVA the School of the Year honor, which is given to the institution with the best overall showing in the annual event’s various competitions. The winning campaigns were created in Frank Anselmo’s Unconventional Advertising class.

The Art Directors Club is the premier organization for integrated media worldwide. Each year, an international panel of creative professionals juries the ADC Awards competition, to recognize the best work from around the world in interactive media, broadcast and print advertising, graphic design, publication design, packaging, photography and illustration. This year’s winners from SVA are:

Jeong Woo Kim (BFA 2013 Design), who won silver in the “book design, book jacket” category for his cover of Ernest Hemingway’s The Old Man and the Sea. 

HemingwayBen Grandgenett (BFA 2013 Design), who received a merit award in the same category for a series of Franz Kafka works.

kafka700Lee Seoung Jun (BFA 2013 Design), who took gold in the “student thesis, motion” category for his video “Dubstep Tutorial.”

BFA Advertising students Irina Siraeva and Angie Talavera, who won bronze in the “poster or billboard, promotional” category for their proposed Victoria’s Secret campaign, Divorce Rate, which used photos of women in lingerie to “plot” trends on a chart’s axes.

victoria700Chris Chai (BFA 2013 Illustration), who received a merit award for his illustration series, “The Bovinian Assembly: APIS.”

Hyui Yong Kim, who won silver in the “mobile, mobile application” category for Coppertone Sunsight, a proposed app that would help users locate the sunniest parts of New York City.

BFA Advertising alumni Gin Chen (2013), Lauren Hom (2013) and Kirk Liu (2013), who won gold in the “student advertising, broadcast craft, non-broadcast commercial” category for Cut Short, their digital advertising concept for the Brady Center to Prevent Gun Violence. As outlined in their video (below), the proposed campaign would interrupt, with gunshots, YouTube videos by popular musicians Marvin Gaye, John Lennon and the Notorious B.I.G., all of whom were killed via firearms.
