BFA Design faculty member Paula Scher’s latest exhibition “U.S.A.” features large-scale cartographic paintings focused on the diversity of the United States. Different sets of data—from population demographics and transportation flows, to geography and climate—are employed to make connections and establish patterns, and also serve to demonstrate Scher’s fascination with hierarchies of information. MFA Fine Arts faculty member David Row’s retrospective exhibition draws from over four decades of his work and traces his longtime exploration of curvilinear and geometric abstraction. Exhibited together for the first time, Row’s paintings are united by their architectural precision and illusive internal structures. Patrick Shoemaker’s (MFA 2013 Fine Arts) new exhibition of paintings “Fire on Fire” examines the similarity and polarity between love and hate, as well as the ambiguity of human nature. The intentions of the figures in Shoemaker’s paintings are unclear—outstretched hands and claws interlock in a hug or possibly a violent grasp. On view at Anna Zorina Gallery, 533 West 23rd Street, through April 2.
