Brian Floca’s (MFA 2001 Illustration as Visual Essay) exquisitely illustrated Locomotive has been named one of the 10 Best Illustrated Children’s Books of 2013 by The New York Times Book Review. 
The book, which Floca also wrote, “…weaves a poetic text and dramatic illustrations into an appealing narrative, providing young readers with both factual information about early train travel and a visceral sense of what it must have been like to climb aboard an iron horse in 1869,” according to The Washington Post.
With this honor, Floca joins a highly esteemed group of artists: Some of the other books to make the list are My Brother’s Book, written and illustrated by Maurice Sendak; The Dark, written by Lemony Snicket and illustrated by Jon Klassen; and Fog Island, written and illustrated by Tomi Ungerer.
